If you work in India or Malaysia, you’re required to put at least 11 percent of your paycheck into an Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF). Your employer puts 12 percent into it, and it serves as a type of savings account for retirement. Here is how to check your balance.
Start With the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation, India
One straightforward way to check your EPF balance is to go through the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), which is part of the Ministry of Labour & Employment and the Government of India. The EPFO has options including text, phone app and online portal. Keeping up with your status allows you to plan for the future, keep a check on your information and even secure a loan if you want to borrow against the amount you have saved. Always make sure your employer has provided you with a Universal Account Number (UAN), because you’ll need it to check your balance.
Using the Online Portal
If you opt to use the online portal, you’ll need to visit the EPFO website. Choose “Our Services” from the top of the page and select “Employees” from the drop-down menu. A new page will show you a list of services. Choose “Member Passbook,” which will take you to a page where you’ll need to log in using your UAN and a password. Once you’re logged into the passbook, you can view your EPF balance and other important information.
Using the App
If you have an Android mobile device, you can download the EPFO app and use it to find your balance. Once you’ve downloaded the app, launch it from your device and click on “Member” and then “Balance and Passbook.” You’ll need to enter your UAN and verified mobile number, but then you can view your balance and other information, like claims statuses.
Making a Phone Call
If you have a registered mobile phone and UAN, you can make a phone call to the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation at 011-22901406. Follow any instructions provided, hang up and wait. You’ll receive a text message shortly after with your balance information.
Getting Your Balance Via Text
Speaking of text messages, if that’s your preferred method of communication, you can get your balance this way without making a call. Send a text to 7738299899 that says “EPFOHO UAN” from your registered mobile phone and the first three letters of your preferred language. For example, if you want to receive a text in English, you’d type “EPFOHO UAN ENG.” Other language options are: Hindi, Telugu, Punjabi, Malayalam, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Tamil and Bengali. Once you do this, you’ll receive a text message with your balance information.
